The Japanese Apple Blog macotakara has heard that Apple wants to allow third party manufacturers to produce USB-C on Lightning cables in the future.

So far this connector combination is available in 1m and 2m lengths exclusively from Apple. After recently lowering the price of the smaller cable and now costing 19 dollars, other manufacturers with similar products will probably be allowed to come onto the market. Apple controls in the so-called MFI program the production of Lightning cables quite strictly to ensure a good quality. This controlled opening of the market could also be a sign that Apple is using Lightning sockets for the new iPhones.

Although Apple cables usually last a long time when handled with care (the author still uses an original MagSafe power supply from 2009), they are not very durable when used a little harsher or when traveling a lot where they get wound up a lot. Therefore it is to be welcomed that Apple would like to allow other manufacturers to bring further variants on the market. For example, we are a fan of Anker cables that are really very robust in design. If you want or have to hold on to the original Apple variantes, you can think about a bend protection before the whole MagSafe power supply or USB-C cable has to be replaced.
