Decision Guidance and Criteria for iPhone Xs

The first thing you notice about iPhone Xs is the huge display. The luminous pixels occupy almost the entire surface of the smartphone. In addition, an OLED display is built in, which is energy-saving and promises extremely high contrast values.

Also fantastic: the metal frame of the iPhone X is made of stainless steel, just like the iPhone 4. This time highly polished. Together with the glass front and back a very nice combination to look at. In terms of dimensions, it’s only slightly larger than a normal iPhone 8, but has a slightly larger display, which is roughly between iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. We have explained the details and the available display area in detail in this article.

Only display,
no Homebutton.

Apple has become quite generous when it comes to memory equipment: the basic version already comes with 64 GB of memory, so that it is no longer absolutely necessary to reach for the next higher version with 256 GB – unless, of course, you shoot a lot of 4K videos. Also 512 GB are available.

By omitting the home button, a new gesture had to be made to get from an app back to the home screen. Apple has opted for a wipe from bottom to top. Since this gesture called the control center, you can now reach it with a wipe downwards, but only from the upper right corner. A wipe from the upper left corner reveals the message overview as usual. This change may be a bit confusing in the first few days, but it is basically logical and necessary for technical progress, so nothing to worry about. Moreover, this device is of the homebutton-free generation and you are right at the forefront.

You’ll also notice that when you unlock the iPhone Xs: Since Touch ID is no longer possible, Apple relies on face recognition. So all you have to do is look at the iPhone and it’s unlocked. That’s fascinating, and it works smoothly in everyday life. Often even better than the Touch ID, which sometimes refuses to work if you have wet fingers, for example.

iPhone Xs vs. iPhone 8

The display size lies exactly between iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Of course, the design is conspicuous: the iPhone 8 still basically follows the lines of the iPhone 6, whereas the Xs points the way into the future.

Face ID, better camera, stainless steel.

So you could say that the iPhone 8 is the somewhat more conservative brother, because it looks familiar and technically relies more on conventional Touch ID, whereas the iPhone Xs is the model that will push into the future and also has the interesting display. So they are two different interpretations of a modern smartphone.

But there are even more differences: the iPhone Xs relies on Face ID as identification technology and no longer on Touch ID. This may sound like a bit of getting used to at the moment, but in everyday life it works very well and makes life a bit easier. The Xs also already has the A12 Bionic chip. That’s iPhone 8 isn’t slow at all, but the Xs is just one step further.

The camera in the iPhone Xs is also a bit better than the one in the iPhone 8. The telephoto lens with f/2.4 has a better aperture and both lenses have optical image stabilization. In addition, the image sensor is larger, which makes shooting easier in poor lighting conditions.

Which iPhone Xr to buy?

The iPhone Xr is the cheaper of the three top models with A12 Bionic Chip. It comes with an LCD display.

Decision Guidance and Criteria for the iPhone Xr

With its 6.1 inch screen diagonal, the iPhone Xr lies exactly between the two OLED models Xs and Xs Max. The Xr also offers a borderless display, but uses the familiar iPhone 8 design in its design language. Finally, several colors are available again: not only black and white, but also red, yellow, blue and coral.

An iPhone with borderless LCD display.

Apple has become quite generous when it comes to memory equipment: the basic version already comes with 64 GB of memory, so that it is no longer absolutely necessary to reach for the next higher version with 128 GB – unless, of course, you shoot a lot of 4K videos. Also 256 GB are available.

By omitting the home button, a new gesture had to be made to get from an app back to the home screen. Apple has opted for a wipe from bottom to top. Since this gesture called the control center, you can now reach it with a wipe downwards, but only from the upper right corner. • A12 Bionic 64-Bit Chip
  • Face ID to unlock, app-purchase and Apple Pay
  • barometer, gyro sensor, accelerometer, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor
  • 12 Megapixel camera with wide-angle and telephoto lens and 7 Megapixel TrueDepth front camera
  • ac WLAN
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • NFC, usable only for Apple Pay
  • 64, 128 or 256 GB Memory space

iPhone Xr vs. iPhone Xs vs. iPhone 8

The main difference between the iPhone Xr and Xs lies in the display technology used: the more expensive Xs uses an OLED display, the cheaper Xr an LCD display. In addition, the Xr 3D Touch doesn’t feature pressure-sensitive touch operation. The used A12 Bionic chip is the same and thus also the speed.

Bright colours are only available for the iPhone Xr.

An obvious difference are the offered colors: if the Xs is only offered in the rather reserved colors space grey, silver and gold, the Xr is available in different bright colors. So if you’re looking for a fast and modern iPhone that also has some color, you’ll be happy with the Xr.

The step from iPhone 8 to Xr costs 170 Dollars.

And the comparison downwards, to the iPhone 8? Many people took the top model of the iPhone X parallel to it, because it contained the same technology, but still came with Touch ID. If you now want to decide between iPhone 8 and Xr and the 170 Dollars surcharge doesn’t matter, then take the more modern Xr. The display is borderless, the camera better, the processor faster and with machine learning capability, and the battery life is even better. If you just want a classic iPhone with Touch ID, then take the iPhone 7. This is still an excellent companion if the basics are enough for you.

Decision criteria for the iPhone 8 & 8 Plus

The front and side look exactly like the iPhone 6, 6S and 7. The antenna stripes are now hidden behind the glass back and for a lot of people this is the cleanest iteration of the classic iPhone design. It still looks gorgeous. It misses the new Face ID feature, for many users, however, Touch ID is what they love. Especially for non tech savvy people a home button is great: press the button and you are in the home menu. Easy as that.

Don’t be fooled by the design though: The internals are completely new and on par with the iPhone X. The iPhone 8 is another package for iPhone X tech – without Face ID and the OLED display that is.

As always the iPhone 8 Plus gets a wide angle and tele lens.

A good thing: already the base model comes with 64 GB storage space, what might me enough for a lot of user. The next step up to 256 GB is not really necessary – unless you are a power user with lots of data and shooting 4K video all day long.

Technical specifications

iPhone 8

  • 4,7″ display with 1334×750 pixels
  • 12 Megapixel camera and 7 Megapixel FaceTime camera
  • 138,4 x 67,3 x 7,3 mm, 148 g

iPhone 8 Plus

  • 5,5″ display with 1920×1080 pixels
  • 12 Megapixel camera with wide angle and tele lens and 7 Megapixel FaceTime camera
  • 158,4 x 78,1 x 7,5 mm, 202 g

Identical for both models:

  • A11 64-bit chip and M11 motion coprozessor
  • TouchID
  • ac Wifi
  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • NFC for Apple Pay
  • 64 or 256 GB storage space

iPhone 8 vs. iPhone 7

The iPhone 8 looks like the iPhone 7, but comes with a glass back for wireless charging. The internal differences are:

  • faster A11 chip with support for augmented reality
  • video capture now possible in 4K and 60 fps
  • support of Galileo in addition to GPS
  • wireless charging (Qi standard)
  • True Tone display

The, compared to the iPhone 7, faster chip is noticeable when you use augmented reality a lot or when you capture a lot of 4K video in 60 fps.

The iPhone 8 comes, like the X, with the currently fastest hardware.

The True Tone display constantly tunes the color white to the surrounding light (white balance) so that the colors always look like in reality. In addition, the max. brightness of 625 cd/m2 is very good.

Wireless charging is very convenient, especially if you have a car that is compatible with it. So the iPhone can charge from the moment on you put it in the storage space.

Tips for your decision making.

iPhone 7 und 7 Plus

You will immediately see strong parallels to the iPhone 6 and 6s. The antenna stripes got smaller and the camera has a different housing, but the scheme stayed the same – which is a good thing, as the design is very pleasing. There are two new black colors: matte black and high glossy Jet Black. If you should decide for the glossy black variant make sure that you treat your iPhone very carefully. That color option gets little scratches very easily.

Main difference between the two sizes is the twin camera with telephoto and wide-angle lens in the iPhone 7 Plus.

Both models do get the optical image stabilisation though.

In addtion, both devices are officially waterproof now and come with stereo speaker. The battery time is 60 minutes better than the iPhone 6S.

No 3,5 mm audio jack anymore!

Apple pushed the future (or not some say) buy dropping the headphone jack completely. You will get a Lightning to audio adapter in the box, but you are not able to charge the iPhone at the same time then. So if you like to listen to music and charge your device at the same time, you will need another adapter.

The flash memory situation has gotten a lot better: The smallest variant comes with 32 GB memory, so you don’t need to go the next step up to 128 GB if you use it wisely.

Technical Specifications

iPhone 7 Plus

iPhone 7

  • 4.7 inch display with 1334×750 pixels
  • 12 Megapixel camera and 7 Megapixel FaceTime camera
  • Battery with 1.810 mAh capacity
  • 138.1 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm in size, 138 g heavy

iPhone 7 Plus

  • 5.5 inch display with 1920×1080 pixels
  • 12 Megapixel camera with wide-angle and telephoto lens and 7 Megapixel FaceTime camera
  • 158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm in size, 188 g heavy

Identical over both models:

  • A10 64-Bit chip with M10 Motion Coprozessor
  • TouchID
  • Barometer, Gyro, Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor
  • ac WLAN
  • Bluetooth 4.2
  • NFC, used for Apple Pay
  • 32, 128 or 256 GB flash memory

iPhone 7 vs. iPhone 6

The iPhone 7 and 6s nearly look identical. The differences lay in the inside.

  • one hour more battery life
  • camera with optical image stabilization, telephoto and wide-angle for 7 Plus
  • A10 processor. Not that much faster than the A9, but more power efficient.
  • Stereo speakers
  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are waterproof now

You see, there has been some serious technical development. But maybe you don’t care about the new characteristics. In this case, you can save some money and buy an iPhone 6s. Especially, when you still need an old-fashioned audio jack.

Usability. That’s why an iPhone.

iPhone 7

Why should you buy an iPhone? Because you are Apple fan? Because you like the design? Sure. Or because it plays nice together with your Mac? We come closer.

To be Apple and design fan may be enough, but behind this argument stands normally the fact, that Apple’s producs just work and work seamlessly together. That still is a main characteristic:

You don’t only buy a smartphone, you buy an ecosystem.

In the day, the ecosystem was just iTunes, which synched your favorite content on your iPhone and also is a content store. Sometimes a user can feel a bit limited, but what it does, it does very well – and without the need to think about it.

Apple added more features from time to time like iCloud for backup and sharing your pictures between family members or other iOS users.

Apple’s newest step merges Mac and iPhone closer together: when the iPhone rings, your Mac also does – and can answer the call. Or you start typing an eMail on your iPhone when on the train and you can continue typing that exact piece of text seamlessly on your Mac. Apple call it Continuity and it is a nice feature.

Touch ID is working flawlessly.

The last big advantage of an iPhone is the continous and longterm supply of new software. At least two to three years you are always up to date, often times much longer. This always brings you new functions – and even more important – security updates.

Problems? Rather unobtrusive reliablitly.

Traditionally, there is always a little “scandal” when introducing a new iPhone. When the iPhone 6 came out, it was called “Bendgate” and played with the fact, that you bend it due to the thin design with a bit of force. Well, mostly these videos are famous, because we like to watch something destructive every now and then. 🙂

With the iPhone 7, there was no such scandal. The iPhone has been polished for such a long time, that it may be near perfection. A reason, why this model is the best selling of all time.

Usability. That’s why.

iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus

Why an iPhone? Because you are an Apple Fan? Because you like the design? Sure. Or because it works together so well with your Mac? Yes, we get closer to the matter. Apple products work very well and they work very well *together*. If you buy a technical device these days, you also buy an eco system with it.

You don’t just buy a smartphone, you buy an eco system.

This started with iTunes, which allows you to sync your content with your phone and even your Apple TV. Apple added more cool solutions: iCloud for Backup and wireless sync, sharing content with your family and other iOS devices and so on.

Apples newest approach is to make sure, that iOS and macOS work together perfectly. Now your Mac rings when your iPhone gets a call and you even can answer it on the Mac. Or you can start to write an email on the iPhone and then end on the Mac – it is called Continuity and is a pretty neat feature.

The latest major point for an iPhone is the extremely long support with new iOS versions. You do not only get new features, much more important is the fast updates, when security problems are discovered. All iPhone back to the 5S can run the latest iOS – compare that to other manufacturers. This is ongoing software support is one of the main points why iPhones are so great.
