Apple has unveiled the new iPhone 14: as usual, there is a normal and a Pro version, both of which come in two different display sizes this time. The mini model, which was available for the iPhone 12 and 13, is omitted.
From the front, the most striking innovation in the Pro model is the smaller notch. Apple has managed to reduce the Face ID and speakers so much that the familiar notch has become a thin line. This might be a small change, but it makes the iPhone look visibly more modern. Everything has remained the same for the normal 14s, it looks like the iPhone 12 and 13.
Apple also uses the A15 chip of the old iPhone 13 Pro in the iPhone 14 models, the 14 Pro models get the newer A16 chip based on 4nm technology. Battery life is said to be a day for the 6.1″ models, and even more for the 6.7″ devices.
iPhone 14 and 14 Plus
The main camera on the 14 has gotten 12 megapixels and a larger sensor that allows for an f/1.5 aperture, Ultrawide seems unchanged. There is also 12 MP and f/1.9 aperture for the front-facing camera, with autofocus for the first time as well. The performance in low light is said to have become twice as good. In terms of video functions, the iPhone 14 now scores with a better stabilization function: Action Mode. Due to the larger image sensor, stronger movement can be compensated.
Crash detection is also included, just like in the Apple Watch. So if you have a car accident, the phone notices it and alerts the emergency call.
Completely new: Satellite emergency call is now possible. The iPhone can connect to satellites to exchange the necessary information. Since the data rate is very limited, Apple has already prepared certain information fragments to make fast communication possible.
This feature is a fantastic advancement of the iPhone and should be very useful to many. However, it is currently only available in the USA. In the first two years, use of the service is included in the purchase of the iPhone, after which the service becomes chargeable. For everyone outside the USA, the iPhone 14 is therefore a 13 Pro with a better camera.
iPhone 14 Pro
The iPhone 14 Pro comes with a smaller notch. In principle, it is no longer a notch but a small black bar. Once you’ve seen it you realize that you’ve always wanted it that way – as long as it can’t be completely invisible of course. It is a pity that it is not possible for the normal iPhone as well. This way, only buyers of the powerful Pro model get the feeling of getting a really new device again.
Apple uses the area around the black line as a “dynamic island” for displaying information and makes it invisible at the same time. This is a solution that was expected from Apple: it looks elegant, is functional and makes the device a bit special again in daily use. However, the solution might have a short lifespan like the Touch Bar: as soon as the Face ID hardware can be installed completely invisibly, the new operating concept might disappear again.
In addition, there is an always-on display and, as already mentioned, the new A16 chip, manufactured in a 4nm process. The camera has also increased again and now comes with a 48 MP pixel sensor, whose size has also grown considerably.
