How to configure VLANs on Bintec RS120 RS123

Here we show you how to use an old Bintec RS120 firewall as a modern switch (the configuration is the same for the current RS123, so you can also see how to set up VLANs here). First read this article and give the device a fixed IP as described. Afterwards come back to this article.

First go to System Management > Interface Mode / Bridge Groups where you can see the interfaces en1-0 and en1-4, which are the yellow ports (en1-0) and the white or SFP port (en1-4). We use the latter as uplink port. Since we want to have separate VLANs but still want to distribute the traffic between the ports, we put the two existing interfaces on a bridge. For this purpose we create a new one and select it for the second entry. For the configuration interface select en1-0 (i.e. cable on the first port).

Afterwards we go to LAN > VLAN - There we create a new entry with "New". The VLAN identifier in the example is creatively "2", you can choose the name freely. As VLAN member we add en1-4. This is the fifth port that connects to another switch or modem and gets VLAN-tagged traffic. Therefore here the setting "tagged". Once the traffic has arrived at the switch it should be distributed to all ports. These are summarized under en1-0. The setting there is "untagged" because we remove the VLAN tag and the traffic is "normal" again and accessible for everyone. Don't forget to activate the VLAN under the option Administration and to set the PVIDs under Port Configuration as shown in the picture.

Of course you can configure the VLANs as you like. The example here shows how to remove VLAN-tagged traffic coming in on the white port or SFP port 5 and then distribute it to all other ports. Traffic from these ports will be accepted, tagged with the correct tag (the PVID setting is for that) and then sent out on the fifth port.

If you have VLANs running but only need the switch as a distributor, this should work. The Bintec should forward tagged VLANs correctly.
