How to install DD-WRT on Asus WL-330gE

If you might have luck to find this old travel router, you can easily convert it to DD-WRT if you wish. Here is how.

Before you start, you should reset the router to factory settings. Do this by pressing the reset button on the back. Then connect the router to your computer by cable. If this is connected with DHCP, then the router should be accessible under 192.169.1.1 (admin/admin).

First of all download the Asus Firmware Restoration Tool for Router. Important for Mac users: it only runs on Windows. So you either have a second computer at hand or have Windows virtualized your computer.

You can find the suitable DD-WRT version here. Simply enter the model number into the search field - 330eg is enough - and select the result. Then download the file named dd-wrt.v24_vpn_generic.bin. This one is under 4MB small but still comes with VPN functionality. You pick any other variant though. Open the downloaded Asus Tool.

Now switch the router off and press the reset button with a pen. Keep it pressed and turn it on again. After about 10 seconds the first LED goes off and then starts flashing. This means that the router is now in recovery mode and works together with the already prepared tool from Asus. A further advantage: if a flash should go wrong, an Asus router can usually still be rescued with this procedure.

Now select the dd-wrt.v24_vpn_generic.bin file in the Asus tool and press the Upload button and wait until the process is finished. If the upload does not start immediately after one second, the tool will not find the router. In this case you should give your computer a fixed IP or you have to use Windows in VirtualBox, set the network interface to "bridged". Wait a few minutes.

After that, the router should be available under 192.168.1.1 and come with lots of new features. You can directly choose a new router password.
