How to install DD-WRT on a D-Link DIR-600 B or DIR-300 B
A D-Link DIR-600 or DIR-300 router is already available as a gift. Therefore it is the ideal router if you have never flashed a router before, after all you can't lose anything. In addition, it can usually be restored via a recovery mode. The following instructions are based on the one on the DD-WRT page, where you can find more details.
It is important that your DIR-600 or DIR-300 is the hardware revision B. You can find this information on the sticker below. The one here in the picture, for example, is revision B2 and therefore suitable for our procedure.
Before you start, you should reset the router to factory settings. Do this by pressing the reset button on the back. Then connect the router to your computer by cable. If this is connected with DHCP, then the router should be accessible under 192.169.0.1 (admin/no password).
You can find the suitable DD-WRT version here. Simply enter the model number into the search field and select the B version of your router. Then download the file named dlink-dir600b-factory-webflash.bin. This will be used when we switch from the original firmware to DD-WRT. For later updates use the dir600b-revb-ddwrt-webflash.bin version.
Good, now go to the router interface and click Maintenance > Firmware update. At the lower point Firmware-Upgrade you can now select and upload the DD-WRT firmware file. Now just wait a few minutes. The globe LED on the router will light orange. Just let him do it. After a while it should now be available at 192.168.1.1 (so reconfigure network on your computer if you have a fixed IP and not DHCP). That's it!
This makes the DIR-600/DIR-300 from D-Link one of the easiest routers to flash. You can turn an old model into a new practical and secure router within a few minutes and save it from electronic waste.
Flashing is similar with the DIR-600 of revision A (also called DIR-601 A). Revision C is unfortunately not usable for switching to DD-WRT.
