Tutorial: How to install neverware CloudReady Chrome OS on an old Mac or MacBook

You have an old MacBook that is no longer provided with new macOS versions? A good alternative, because very slim and fast, is the CloudReady software from neverware, which is based on the open source variant Chromium OS. It is the free version of Google's Chrome OS, which basically consists of a pumped up Chrome browser. The installation is extremely simple, provided you have access to a Windows computer. There is also a variant to do the whole thing via detours on the Mac, but it has never been successful when we tried it.

On the Windows machine, download the Home Edition of CloudReady in form of the Windows USB Maker. You should also have a USB stick ready.

Now open the USB Maker and let a 64 bit variant (depending on the computer also the 32 bit variant, it depends on what your Mac supports) of the installer write to the USB stick. This takes about 15 minutes.

Then plug the USB stick into the Mac on which you want to install CloudReady. Remember: the installer deletes everything! So if you still want to back up your data, now is the time! Turn on your Mac and hold down the alt key.

The USB stick appears as an EFI drive with an orange logo. Select it and start the Mac from the stick.

The CloudReady screen welcomes you. In the lower right corner you can click on the clock and the WLAN logo. A window opens with the option "Install CloudReady". Select this option.

CloudReady will now be installed on the hard drive of your old Mac. Give it a few minutes of your time. After a restart you can set the usual things like Wifi password, language etc. and login with your Google account.

That's it! Be curious what the slim operating system can get out of your old Mac. This is a very good solution, especially for people who are only browsing the internet or just want to have watch Netflix. For the latter, a tip: For the playback of protected video streams, proprietary codecs have to be installed.

Go to the bottom right of the clock > gear wheel > media plugins.

Then restart once and you can also enjoy protected streams.
