Long awaited, now it won’t come at all: Apple’s AirPower charging mat is finally canceled.
As Techcrunch writes, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering has commented to the blog via email and announced that the AirPower project has been discontinued. The high demands Appe places on his hardware could not have been met.
“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.”
The idea of the AirPower charger was that up to three devices could have been placed freely on the device – without a fixed loading place. This flexibility, however, made the project very complex: many charging coils had to be stacked on top of each other and coordinated exactly – the effort was probably too high for a device for everyday use, if not even the physics had put a spanner in the works.
If you still want to have a Qi loader that could even offer two charging spots, we recommend our self-build project from an old Time Capsule. Small interim report from practice: yes, it still runs and loads iPhone, MacBook and whatever else is there every day.
