LG promises a software update for their own televisions mid this year.

LG W9 OLED TV 02

This will give LG TVs the already announced compatibility with AirPlay 2 – so no Apple TV is necessary anymore. The TV can stream content such as movies and series directly from Apple, and data can also be transferred from the iPhone, for example. LG writes about this:

New LG TVs wants to receive an upgrade mid-year to support Apple AirPlay 2 and Apple HomeKit for easy streaming of video and audio content and connectivity to Apple’s smart home products. 2019 LG TV owners can also expect to receive a firmware update that will add Amazon Alexa support to complement Google Assistant which is included out of the box, making LG the only TV brand to provide support for both leading AI platforms without the need for additional hardware.

The press release also mentions that in addition to the update to AirPlay 2 for the 2019 models, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility will also be delivered. This makes LG the first manufacturer to combine all three major smart home platforms into one TV.
