The ifixit repair service has now also commented on the subject of Flexgate: the fact that MacBook Pros will have a lot of defective display cables in models from 2016 and later.

We had already made you aware of this circumstance weeks ago and pointed you to the corresponding petition. Now ifixit has also written an article about it. Their analysis is the same: The problem is that Apple uses ribbon cables for the connection to the display. That’s not a problem at first, it’s the same with the 12″ MacBook. However, they have much more freedom of movement inside the small model. The problem with the Pro models is that when the display is fully open, they are pulled around a piece on the logicboard and a crack appears – punctually after the end of the warranty period.

Cables cannot be replaced because they are firmly connected to the display for cost reasons. This means that 600 dollars are due for a new display – and the reason for the problem, a cable that is too short and is bent around components, has not been solved.

Currently, there is only one tip: if the display does not open further than 90 degrees, the cable should last longer. However, it remains to be seen whether this is the right way to use a device costing several thousand euros. The future will show whether Apple will be accommodating with even more frequently failing displays in the future. Probably many normally used MacBook Pro will have defective display cables after around three years of use.
