Some of the new iPad Pros may already be bent at the factory when you unpack them. According to Apple this is normal.
Some time ago there was already this video indulging in destruction showing how easily the new iPad Pros can be broken through. However, no normal person does that, and a 12″ MacBook shouldn’t be any better off with such a treatment.
What’s interesting, though, is that some iPad Pros now already come bent out of the factory. The Verge writes that Apple now confirms that this is completely normal:
Apple has confirmed to The Verge that some of its 2018 iPad Pros are shipping with a very slight bend in the aluminum chassis. But according to the company, this is a side effect of the device’s manufacturing process and shouldn’t worsen over time or negatively affect the flagship iPad’s performance in any practical way. Apple does not consider it to be a defect.
This means that a bend in the device, which can cost up to 2000 dollars, is defined as acceptable. With the large number of devices produced, it sure can happen that an error creeps in. We also had MacBooks with misaligned displays or iPhones where the side button didn’t work properly. However, they were replaced without any problems.
So from now on Apple doesn’t seem to have the long-praised precision of a hundredth of a millimeter anymore, but the approach: if it still works, it’s ok. In addition to the unacceptable optical limitation for the price, the question arises as to how Apple will react to warranty requests in the future if your iPad looks like this, because normally warranty claims are rejected for devices with mechanical damage. So even if the bend doesn’t bother you, you should register it with Apple so that any warranty claims will still be valid later.
