Want to change the battery in your MacBook (Pro)? We tell you why you should not buy the cheapest offers on eBay or Amazon.

If your MacBook is still worth over a thousand euros, you should buy high quality batteries. With older models, however, you want to save a little. In some cases it is no longer absolutely necessary to achieve the optimal performance as originally from the factory, it is usually sufficient if the battery provides a somewhat shorter runtime. A functioning battery is important, however, because otherwise the MacBooks only run at half speed – Apple made the power storage mandatory. So if you remove it completely, the CPU will also clock down.

If you now think you could get a functional and safe battery for 20 buck, we would like to tell you: it will not work like this. With the model we have photographed here, it becomes clear why: It inflated already during the first charging attempt. It was plugged in for half an hour and would probably have exploded and possibly burst into flames if we hadn’t pulled the plug immediately. It was only noticeable on time because the MacBook was not yet screwed up at the bottom and rose – a quite conspicuous behaviour.

Hence our tip: since all batteries come from China, you should spend a little more and buy from a local importer. This will cost a little more, but importers, as they are bound to local law, will pay more attention to what and from whom they buy. Quality control is better. In addition, with the very cheap batteries, the charging test in the factory is usually simply not done. An error such as the one that occurred with our test copy should actually be directly noticeable during production. So buy from a trustworthy dealer, who ideally offers you two quality and price levels, but both of which should not compromise safety.
