Apple has introduced the third generation of the Butterfly keyboard along with the new 2018 MacBook Pros – with an interesting change.
As ifixit describes in detail here in an article, Apple has brought an interestingpatent into production.
The problem with the very flat keyboard design is that even the smallest amounts of dust or crumbs can render the keys inoperable. To avoid that, there is now a thin plastic film that is intended to seal the outer edge between the keys and the mechanism. It should no longer be possible for dirt to simply paralyze the mechanics.
A nice, very nice side effect: The soft foil dampens typing noises, making the keyboard quieter. Hopefully Apple has killed two birds with one stone and thus made the keyboard mechanically more robust and at the same time more comfortable. The typing feel itself has received little criticism and has even been praised by many as progress.
