Apple today unveiled three new iPhones: Xs, Xs Max and Xr.
The new name scheme is quickly explained: “s” stands as usual for a successor model. So the Xs and Xs Max are the successors of the iPhone X with a similar design. But this time the big version of the two is not called “Plus” but “Max”.
iPhone XS and XS Max with OLED display and max. 512 GB memory
The XS variants are the two top models that are available with 64, 245 or 512 GB memory and both have an OLED display. There are three colours to choose from: Space Grey, Silver and Gold.
Also new: a new camera and the A12 Bionic Chip, which makes the iPhones even faster and more economical. The size difference between the normal and Max model is 0.7 inches in the diagonal – so you have the choice between a 5.8 inch and a 6.5 inch model.
Both models are IP68 certified, which means they will survive a stay in two meters of water for more than 30 minutes. This should be enough time to fish them out of the pool. The displays support 120 Hz refresh rate and tap to wake.
The A12 Fusion Chip has 2 High Performance Cores and 4 High Efficiency Cores, which can all be used together. A neural engine with 8 cores for machine learning is also on board. The most obvious application for this is for the camera: With dynamic depth of field, the background, i.e. the bokeh, can be adjusted afterwards when a photo is taken. This makes it possible to change the aperture afterwards.
The two top models support a conventional SIM card and an eSIM card, which requires the support of the provider. Only China gets a version that can accept two physical SIM cards.
The Xs models can be ordered from 17 September, prices start at 999 dollars.
The cheaper iPhone with LCD Display: iPhone Xr
Apple has introduced three new iPhones, with the cheapest in size being in the middle: the screen of the LCD model measures 6.1 inches diagonally (in contrast to the OLED technology in the XS models).
Similar to the iPhone 5c, Apple uses different colors for this iPhone: black, white, red, yellow, coral and blue are available. So if you don’t necessarily need an OLED display and want an iPhone between Xs and Xs Max, the Xr is made for you. But maybe the different color variants are already the deciding factor.
The iPhone Xr gets the same front camera for Face ID, also the rear camera gets 12 megapixels. The A12 Bionic processor is also on board. What is missing is 3D Touch, which has been replaced by Haptic Touch.
The LCD iPhone can be pre-ordered from 19 October at a price of 749 dollars.
