27″ iMac finally cancelled

The 27″ iMac is dead.

Apple has confirmed to ArsTechnica that a 27″ iMac will not be coming back.

With the introduction of the Mac Studio and the Studio Display, this step was actually logical. The Mac Studio, which comes exclusively with Apple M1 Max and Ultra chips, appeals to the target group who previously bought an iMac Pro or an iMac with maximum features. Of course, the display is extra, but it can be used much longer than it has to be disposed of every time you change your computer, and the performance is also a lot higher (and the cooling is much quieter, which many people will probably appreciate). In view of the Mac Studio, no one should shed a tear for the top-equipped iMac.

The same goes for those buyers who tended to buy the standard-equipped computers. The Studio Display is now available for this in combination with a Mac mini, as we have already explained here. This also gives you a very good 27″ computer and you can keep the display for longer if you upgrade in the future. Apple may even add a Mac mini with an M1 Pro, so that you are a little more flexible.

Displays and Macs can be freely combined

If you value a very large screen but only need relatively little computing power, you can also combine a Mac mini with the Pro Display XDR. You have to invest several thousand dollars for this, but it is possible. So Apple has reintroduced a little more flexibility in the Mac sector.

The high costs for the Pro Display in 32″ are probably the reason why there will be no 32″ iMac in the foreseeable future. Since Apple doesn’t do things by halves, a new, large iMac would also have to have a very good 32″ display with a 6K resolution, and this alone would blow the budget for the target group. Anyone who wants to afford it (because it’s the working tool) should now already combine the 6K display with a Mac Studio or Mac Pro, the prosumers connect the Mac Studio to the Studio Display and the normal user connects a Mac mini to the Studio Display.
