Everyone who had planned to install the latest version of macOS 10.14 Mojave on older Macs had been disappointed by Apple so far. Now there is a patch, which makes it possible.

As with Sierra and High Sierra, Apple has drawn the line on supported hardware. In both versions, however, it was possible to install the operating system on selected older computers with a patch programmed by Collin (dosdude1).

The same now also applies to the macOS 10.14 Patch: it allows the installation of Mojave on older computers (currently only available as a test version). But this time it’s a bit more complicated: While the limit at 10.12 and 10.13 was drawn politically by Apple and not bound to a certain hardware, it looks different at 10.14: here Apple actually requires a metal compatible graphics card. Thus, in principle, all computers will be excluded when produced before 2012. The patch now allows installation on these machines, however:

  • Mac Pro, iMac, or MacBook Pro from early 2008 or later
  • MacBook Air or Aluminum Unibody MacBook from late 2008 or later
  • Mac Mini or white MacBook from early 2009 or later
  • Xserve from early 2008 or later

The currently existing problems consist of possible graphic errors and problems with AMD Radeon HD 5xxx/6xxx GPUs. Webcams may also fail or the trackpad may not be recognized correctly. In macOS Mojave the drivers are probably no longer available. A complete overview of the points you should pay attention to and detailed instructions can be found here. The beta version of Mojave can be downloaded directly using the tool provided.
