We sent our MacBook Retina 12″ in for the keyboard repair program.

Everything went smoothly, Apple swapped the whole top case at no additional cost. In the course of time some keys of our golden model did not work anymore. For example, the Shift key didn’t want to rise anymore, as did the space bar, which at some point gave up completely.

If you are also affected by non-functioning keys, just contact Apple. Up to four years after purchase, Apple simply replaces defective models.

Keyboard Golden MacBook

Our 2015 model did get exact the same first generation butterfly keyboard as it had in the beginning. We were told this in the Apple Store and also tested it extensively: you won’t get an improved version. When typing you notice two things clearly: It is not the second generation which feels a bit better and – surprisingly – the new keyboard not only works, it just feels fresher.

Display Reflection MacBook 12

An equally existing MacBook 12″ from 2015, which is used daily for typing but whose keys all still work, brought this feeling to light in direct comparison. The new keyboard is simply crisper and the pressure point is clearly defined. On the MacBook with the old keyboard, the function is flawless, but you notice that the keys are no longer as motivated in the lifting movement. It feels a little worn in. This is not necessarily worse and maybe even the normal state planned by Apple after a certain typing phase, but the difference is noticeable in a direct comparison.

The question arises as to why one MacBook is still typing and the other is not (or now again). Without wanting to offend anyone: The still functioning one was treated more carefully and made acquaintance with fewer crumbs. If you like to eat at the computer, you can at least try to distribute all the elements flying around everywhere, but not on the keyboard. 😉

For all owners of defective keyboards in MacBooks from 2015 onwards: simply have them replaced. The few days of waiting are worth it.
