We are delighted that ifixit has taken apart the 2018 model of the 13-inch MacBook Pro. There are a few but interesting changes.
The most obvious is that the battery has increased capacity. In addition, it now consists of six individual cells and is also designed in such a way that it really makes use of all available space. Apple had still left some space around the battery in the previous iterations. The basic top case design was designed to handle even slightly larger batteries.
Also new in a MacBook Pro: The T2 chip. This takes over several functions, including the control of the SSD chips. Because they are soldered on, Apple can control the chips directly and use them in the way that is best for the system. Maybe the extremely good performance is due to the fact that you don’t have to adhere to existing standards. It would be interesting to know what happens when a memory chip says goodbye. Perhaps the controller can handle it and only offers half the capacity. We’ll keep our eyes open and tell you if there’s a MacBook that suffers from this situation.
In addition, the external power supply has been revised: However, it is not clear what the purpose of this is. Apparently the change is so serious that it at least gets a new model number. Obvious detail: The USB-C port is no longer made of metal but of plastic.
