Apple’s upcoming version of macOS places higher demands on the hardware and will therefore leave older hardware behind.

The decisive factor here are the graphics cards: Apple relies completely on the graphics interface Metal for macOS and therefore the Macs must logically have metal-capable graphics cards, which is the case from around 2012. The following models are supported by macOS 10.14:

  • 12″ MacBook from early 2015
  • MacBook Air from mid 2012
  • MacBook Pro from mid 2012
  • Mac mini from late 2012
  • iMac from late 2012
  • iMac Pro
  • Mac Pro from late 2013 (exceptions: mid 2010 and mid 2012 machines with metal compatible graphics are also included)

This means that there will probably be some Macs that still run very well and no longer have the latest operating system. Especially for users who wished for the Dark Mode, this is a bit disappointing. However, the step is also understandable: If the software is to develop further, sometimes a line must be drawn. And here the suitability of the graphics card is an understandable reason.

In addition, Apple will support 10.11, 10.12 and 10.13 with security updates for several years to come. Only when this support stops is it time to get upset and look around. So let’s postpone this discussion for a few years. 😉
