The DVD Player App survives Apple’s planned switch to 64 bit.
macOS 10.14 Mojave will be the last system on which 32 bit apps can still be started. The interesting thing to learn from Brendan Shanks is that the DVD player app will actually get an update to be 64 bit compatible in the future.

There is even support for the Touch Bar! So nothing should stand in the way of a cosy evening with an external drive and cool control via the mini display.
