Since Germany has not yet had a simple, nationwide warning system (the Katwarn and NINA apps, which have to be installed separately, Ignore them), cell broadcast is finally being used to spread warning messages.
Cell broadcast is technically quite simple and simply sends the same message to all mobile phones that are logged into a radio cell – hence the name. In many other countries this has been done for years. After all, the effort is low due to the existing mobile phone networks and keeps costs low.
For the German version, your smartphone should have recently received a message that you should update the technical mobile information. Once you have done that, your iPhone can now receive warnings. For iPhones, this is possible with models under iOS 16 and iOS 15.7.1.
You can see this function when you go to Settings > Notifications. At the bottom you will find three options that you can toggle on and off. Curious: the instructions are in German, regardless of the language in which the rest of the iOS is set.
To test the system, a test message will be sent to you tomorrow at eleven. Your iPhone should therefore give a warning tone at eleven on the dot – even if it is set to silent. So don’t be surprised and rather hope that the test of the alarm infrastructure is successful.Ce
