Samsung has introduced a new representative of its own Smart Monitor series: the M8 in 32″ with 4K resolution.
At Samsung, Smart Monitor refers to a series of displays that can not only serve as simple monitors, but can also offer functions without a connected computer. For example, the models called M8 can access popular streaming services and even offer AirPlay 2 support. There is also a remote control available for this function. A webcam makes video conferencing possible. The maximum brightness should be 400 nits, the sRGB color space is almost completely covered at 99%.
The design and the four available colors are reminiscent of Apple’s current design language. On the one hand, this is not particularly innovative, on the other hand, Eizo monitors have looked like this for a long time from the front and the device also fits well on an Apple user’s desk.
So the device convinces with its design, the webcam, the standalone functions and the price, which should be between $700 and $800. The most obvious limitation is with the connections: one USB-C (with 65 watt charging function) for the connection to the computer and another USB-C connection. Micro HDMI is available as a second video input. The monitor does not become a dock replacement. The other properties make it a strong competitor to the more expensive Studio Display.
