Android Emulator in first version for Apple Silicon released

Android Emulator Apple Silicon Mac

The first rough Android emulator for Apple Silicon Macs is there.

Google has released the in-house Android Emulator in a first unfinished version for Apple Silicon Macs.

The software currently runs exclusively on M1 Macs and is still very much unfinished. Among other things Google lists the following as not working:

  • Webview doesn’t work
  • No sound
  • No device skins
  • video codecs not working
  • 32 bit ARM apps won’t work
  • Graphical glitches in some Vulkan apps
  • Popup on startup about not being able to find the ADB path (ADB will still notice the emulator if you have it installed though)
  • When building, it may be faster to start then cancel the Python triggered build and then reissue ninja -C objs install/strip versus letting the Python triggered build finish.

This should give developers a first impression on an M1 Mac, but the emulator is not yet fully productive. However, one can assume that the software will be completed quickly. The Apple Silicon Macs already have such a good reputation that the software adaptations should not be long in coming.
