Synology has a new NAS in the portfolio that offers space for five hard drives: The DS1520+.
On board are a 4-core Celeron with 2.0 GHz (Turbo Boost up to 2.7) as well as 8 GB of RAM. It is also possible to use two NVMe SSDs as cache. Compared to the predecessor model, indexing tasks are said to have become about 20% faster.
As with the recently introduced DS920+ and DS420+, Synology is also refusing faster Ethernet interfaces on the DS1520+. There is no 2.5 or 5 Gbps port, let alone a 10 Gbps port, whether RJ45 or SFP+. Unfortunately, even with this 5-bay model, it is not possible to upgrade one of these faster interfaces with a plug-in card, as there is no space for it.
The model is thus less aimed at individual users who want to quickly back up a huge backup, but rather at groups where many different users access the device simultaneously. The offered four gigabit ports are intended for this usage scenario.
