Netatmo makes its weather stations HomeKit compatible. However, there are several hardware versions.
We pointed this out to you yesterday. We have read a very detailed blog post by Netatmo, which describes in detail how it came to the development of a HomeKit compatible model and which hurdles had to be overcome. It’s very interesting to read, especially because many manufacturers don’t bother to allow a look behind the scenes.
To answer the initial question: it is the hardware version v3, which is HomeKit compatible, the v1 and v2 have older internal hardware and for example too little memory, so that they are not updatable. The good Netatmo support also responds via email:
Our first Weather Stations were produced in 2012, prior the launch of HomeKit. In October 2016, less than 6 months after the announcement of the Apple Home app, we started the first production of Weather Stations with an compatible hardware with Apple HomeKit. All Stations produced (and not sold) after this date are adapted to support HomeKit. However, some Stations sold in recent months are part of a former batch and are therefore V2 Stations produced a long time ago. This is due to inventory management that can vary from one reseller to another.
So: all Netatmo weather station models produced from October 2016 onwards are compatible with HomeKit, however, older v2 models that are not compatible with HomeKit may have been sold during this period. A little tip: if you want to exchange your device with a HomeKit compatible one contact the support – you may get offered a discount.
To share the whole story with the users we find an interesting thing from Netatmo. So you can see how much work to do in the development. If you can’t update your weather station now, you shouldn’t get angry. After all, you are so interested in weather data that you always check it manually.
