You know the tip that you have to switch off wet smartphones quickly and put them in rice so that they dry quickly. ifixit has tested them and found out: this is nonsense.

However, not the first tip, switching off: this is always advisable when electronic devices come into contact with liquids. If possible, the battery should also be removed. So if you know how to open an iPhone and disconnect the battery connection, you’ve already gained a lot.

Switch off and not on again!

However, the myth is that rice absorbs moisture better and dries the device faster than if it were only in the fresh air. In reality though it’s even rather counterproductive.

ifixit gives some tips what you should do, if your device should ever experience any water damage:

  • Switch off power immediately, remove battery if possible
  • Let water run out and lay device so that it can dry well
  • do not switch on again
  • Dismantle device and clean it with isopropanol alcohol or bring them to a repair shop

In no case should you try to turn it on again to see if it still works after you have the impression that it has dried. The problem is not primarily the water but the corrosion caused by the minerals it contains. The attempt to switch it on may even aggravate the damage.
