You almost always need an adapter for the Macbook Pro with USB-C output. All the better when there are meaningful and powerful combinations of outputs in an adapter, as in the CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 miniDock, for example.

The small dock, which seems to be a somewhat larger adapter, comes in two versions: variant one with two HDMI, one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0 and one Ethernet port and variant two with two DisplayPort, one USB 3.0 and one Ethernet connection. As you can see, the DisplayPort version loses the USB 2.0 port.

In addition, however, you gain more resolution: where with the HDMI variant each of the two outputs “already” ends at 3840×2160 pixels, the DisplayPort variant creates 4096×2160 pixels on both ports simultaneously. Pleasantly, the two adapters are also bus-powered, i.e. they use the Thunderbolt 3 port of the Macbook for power supply, which provides a maximum of 15 watts. This also eliminates the need for an external power supply.

Surprisingly, the two miniDocks are not as expensive as one might expect in view of the built-in Thunderbolt technology. They are available for 110 to 120 dollars each.
