You want to use a MagSafe power supply on a USB-C port or vice versa? There are now adapters that make this possible.
Adapter from Apple MagSafe 1 and 2 to USB-C
This adapter is useful, if you still have some old MagSafe power supplies at home, because the MacBook has died. Now you have a new one with USB-C port and therefore you can’t connect the power supply. With a MagSafe to USB-C adapter you can now connect the two standards. The small dongle translates from Apple’s magnetic connector to the new USB-C standard.
We have linked you two links to Aliexpress. It seems as if all models for MagSafe 1 and 2 ports should work, but MagSafe 2 is only mentioned explicitly by one seller. Whether this really makes a difference remains to be seen.
It should also be noted that losses occur when converting from MagSafe to USB-C and the maximum output power is 60 watts. The achievable powers look as follows:
- 45 Watt Apple power supply leads to 45 Watt output power
- 60 Watt Apple power supply leads to 45 Watt output power
- 85 Watt Apple power supply leads to 60 Watt output power
So there is always some loss with the higher wattages. But for about ten dollars the adapter is not a bad idea and gives an old power supply or MagSafe connector on the Thunderbolt display a new task.

Adapter from USB-C to Apple MagSafe 2
You like the first adapter, but would like to connect it the other way round, from a new USB-C power supply to Apple’s MagSafe 2? No problem, there is also an adapter for that. This is handy if you don’t want to invest in a MagSafe power supply anymore but still need to recharge an older MacBook from time to time.
The adapter converts the power fed via USB-C to a MagSafe 2 connector. The maximum output power is 60 watts. So it’s also enough for 15″ models, even if they can’t be charged under full load.
