Samsung has developed a display that has even been officially tested.
The OLED display used is covered with several layers of plastic and is intended to eliminate the disadvantage of glass, which splinters on hard surfaces in the event of a fall. However, the optical properties and scratch resistance of the surface should be according to Hojung Kim (Samsung Displays) similar to those of glass:
“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass.”
To underline the stability of the new display, Samsung has had the display tested at the US Underwriters Laboratories, an official test laboratory that also works on behalf of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the US Department of Labor. It turned out that it not only survived falls from a height of 1.2 m, but even from a height of 1.8 m without damage.
If all this is true and especially the scratch resistance of the surface can withstand everyday use, this would really be a step forward. A fall of your smartphone would then no longer be immediately punished with a broken display.
