Apple unveiled an external graphics solution yesterday as part of the launch of new MacBook Pro models.
The eGPU, designed together with Blackmagic, is connected via Thunderbolt 3 and also functions as a dock. There are not only one but two Thunderbolt ports for daisychaining (looping through the connection for further TB devices). There are also HDMI and four USB 3.0 ports.
The built-in power adapter has enough power to charge a mobile Mac up to 85 watts. This means you can always be on the move at full load without any power supply problems.
To the actual content, the graphics card: Apple relies on a Radeon Pro 580 graphics processor with 8 GB GDDR5 graphics memory. For all those who work a lot with VR applications or use other programs that simply need GPU power, a good choice.
The price of the external graphics/dock solution is 699 dollars. It is only available directly from Apple.
