The Matter standard, which is intended to connect smart home devices across manufacturers, is ready and will slowly find its way into many devices.
The name Matter refers to the communication protocol. Matter devices can be connected via WLAN, Bluetooth or Thread. It is also possible, for example, to connect Zigbee devices via a bridge, which then translates to Matter. Philips Hue has promised such an update: This allows the whole installation to remain as it is and still speak the new Matter standard via a bridge update.
The Connectivity Standard Alliance, in which the manufacturers cooperate for the new standard, has put an overview page for compatible Matter devices online here. Logically, there are not yet many of them.
We have also compiled a list of all smart home devices for Apple users and explained all standards and how they work together. We will continue to add to this list as more devices with Matter standards are added. HomeKit, or in the future Apple Home, will not be completely superfluous: for example, cameras are not even provided for in Matter, secondly, it may be that only certain functions are accessible via Matter. How the interaction of the different components will work in the future remains to be seen.
