Synology introduces two new NAS devices that are assigned to the next year 2021.
The DS1821+ and DS1621+ reveal that Synology already counts them as part of next year’s series with the 21 suffix. The smaller model, the DS1621+, offers six slots for hard disks out of the box and can be expanded twice by five additional slots each with additional modules (5+5+6=16). This is also possible with the larger model. Since this already has eight slots, you end up with a total of 18 hard disk slots.
The CPU on board is now an AMD Ryzen Quad-Core with 2.2 GHz. It seems that Intel no longer offers the right chips for many providers. Both devices offer two M.2 2280 slots for NVMe cache. In addition to the ports for the expansion modules, there are two USB 3.2 ports on the smaller model and three USB 3.2 ports on the larger model.
Both NAS models also offer four 1 Gigabit ports. Unfortunately, Synology remains true to itself here and does not install 10 Gbit ports. This is a shame, especially for single users, who are always throttled to 1 Gbit/s speed. A 10 Gbit port is of course possible, but it has to be retrofitted via an adapter card and paid extra accordingly.
