The correct name of the app for telephoning for telephone numbers registered in the FritzBox is Fritz!App Fon and version 5.0.0 has been available for download or updating in the App Store for a few days. However, anyone who relies on the app as a critical infrastructure currently has a problem: incoming calls are no longer displayed.
AVM claims to have updated the app and to rely on the technologies available in iOS, such as CallKit, and it has to be said that the telephone quality with an existing connection is really good (HD sound, tested on an older 7940). A great voice quality. Unfortunately, that only applies if you dial out with the app. Incoming calls are not signalled. Except – and this is the annoying workaround – when the app is open in the foreground. And of course that is not practical for everyday use.
The current reviews in the App Store for the app are accordingly. AVM advises working through this support article or deleting and re-creating the app as a telephony device in the FritzBox. But that doesn’t seem to be of any use to many – not to us either.
To make matters worse, many FritzBoxes with older operating system versions no longer work with the app. From now on, at least 7.20 must be running on the box. If you are still running an older model and the app has already been updated, you were out of luck.
As for the missed calls, we strongly expect AVM to fix the bug quickly. It is surprising, however, that this was not noticed during testing, precisely because the app was last updated a year ago.
Update
AVM updated the app to version 5.0.1, which should fix the mentioned problems.
