Sony has launched the Sony WF-1000XM4 Bluetooth earphones, the successors of the Sony WF-1000XM3. Some criticisms were addressed and improvements were made.
The new charging case is much smaller than before and can finally be charged via Qi Charger. Sony also claims to have improved the fit and to have analyzed many different ear shapes – of course, the user’s own anatomy is still crucial, so many report an excellent fit and others a poorer one. But that is more or less the case with all in-ear models. What Sony does differently with this model: instead of simply silicone plugs, the flexible connectors are filled with a foam this time, which is supposed to improve the fit.
Sustainability has also played a role: the outer packaging is made of sustainable material and thus also soothes your environmental conscience.
But what makes them stand out compared to the AirPods Pro? First, the battery life: one charge is enough for eight hours, with recharging through the case, a total of 24 hours is possible. Then, the sound quality is better: The Sonys are clearly superior, especially in the bass range. The WF-1000XM4 can continue this advantage when used with a device that supports LDAC. This increases the sound quality significantly compared to the AAC codec. However, this is not possible with Apple devices. Also important for some: the earphones are also available in black and thus less conspicuous than white models.

Unfortunately, the Sony earphones do not have multi-point connections and automatic switching between different Apple devices. If you constantly switch between MacBook, Apple TV, iPhone, etc., then the AirPods stand out with their usability. However, if you mainly use the earphones on one device and are more concerned about good sound quality, then the updated Sony WF-1000XM4 are at least worth a look.
