Xiaomi has introduced the newly developed Mi Air Charge technology. With it, wireless charging is now really as you imagined it: you can walk around the room and the smartphone will still be charged.
This is made possible by the rather elaborate infrastructure behind it: 144 antennas are installed in the ceiling and these pass the energy on to the end device via beamforming. With the millimeter waves used (several gigahertz), up to 5 watts of power are currently possible.
This means you could now watch endless movies on your smartphone or gamble without having to search for the cable or battery pack. Of course, the effort is still considerable, but we can well imagine that this technology will first be used in public places, such as cafés.
