It’s official: The German Sparkassen are participating in Apple Pay.

They had been reluctant to do so for a long time and favoured their own solution, but since Apple had the technical infrastructure in its hands, the balance of power was pretty even. This seems to have led to negotiations in which both sides could agree. Now even the Sparkassen logo has made it to the Apple website next to that of norisbank and others, listed under the heading “2019”.

So assume that you can pay with a Sparkassen credit card via Apple Pay from mid-December on. Another interesting feature: the Giro Cards, which are widely used in Germany, can also be used for payment via iPhone and Apple Watch from the beginning of next year. So you could say: the waiting was worth it.
