Audio: Digital optical cable on MacBook Pro shows no signal. All dusty!

You want to connect an older Macbook or MacBook Pro with optical digital output to your audio system via optic cable but no signal arrives? A look at the end of the cable usually reveals why: if it does not glow red, the light usually does not even get into the cable.

The cause is often a lot of dust, which has been compressed further and further when using the conventional 3.5 mm jack and then collected in front of the red LED. The solution: remove very carefully (really with patience) and with small needle the dust cushion from inside the audio port. After that, you should get a clean and lossless digital signal from your MacBook again.
