Today we test an affordable Alexa and Google Assistant compatible Wifi smart plug.

The power outlet supports Alexa and Google Assistant at this price, not Siri and HomeKit. With this is mind you should have some Amazon echoes at home or the Google Assistant for iOS on the iPhone, which works perfectly with the Oittm device.

As you can see in the pictures we are testing the European version, but the US hardware should be the same internally. In addition, the software side is exactly the same. Nice these days: the packaging consists only of cardboard. No useless plastic inserts are used.

Another positive surprise: a precise manual in which the App connection even works as described! Fantastic. In addition, you even get a three-year warranty on the device, if you register it with the manufacturer. Unfortunately, the QR code did not work to download the app, but we found it manually in the App Store under “Oittm”.

The switchable socket convinces with quality: There is a multi-colored LED (which does not light up luckily when switched off), the plastic looks reasonably high quality, the switch is precise and the case turns out to be pretty small.

We also took a look inside the switchgear: The structure looks neat, the solder joints make a good impression. The relay is of good quality. The Wifi module itself is almost vanishingly small. Maybe this explains the low standby power consumption: Our meter fluctuated between zero and 1.3 watts.

So after the app was found, you have to go through a registration process first. You do not have to type in your phone number, the e-mail address that you have set up (top tip) for your smart home devices is sufficient. After this, you can operate the socket via the app. This even works if the Internet fails over the internal Wifi, but only until the iPhone notices that there is no Internet connection.

The app connection worked without any problems, so let’s try the connection with Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant. Both ecosystems work together with the Oittm Wifi socket. Make sure that you wait up to 30 minutes after registering to sign up for the account you have created. In the meantime go for a cup of coffee. Again, you can use an eMail address again instead of entering a phone number.

Important tip on both Google and while looking for the right Amazon Skill: The search for Oittm will not get you anywhere, in both cases the search for Smart Life is the right one! After this hurdle both ecosystems recognize the socket immediately. Intuitive is something else, but for the price you cannot complain at this point.

The socket is then responsive to the Google Assistant in the home screen simply by voice command. You can also use Alexa via the Alexa App or the Reverb App . Of course, there is also the own Oittm app available, which allows a simple control as well as the creation of scenes and of course the additon of new devices. We had the model running now over two weeks in the test and it did that without any hassle. It is a good and cheap outlet for those who do not need HomeKit compatibility. So if you are happy with the manufacturer app or have even installed Google Assistant, it is quite a good buy.
